If your cat regularly spends the night nestled at your feet, you might assume they’re merely seeking out a cosy spot to rest.
However, according to cat experts, this adorable behaviour could actually reveal quite a bit about your pet’s feelings towards you.
A TikTok video, posted by @cats.psy, suggests cats who opt to sleep at their owner’s feet aren’t making a random choice.
Rather, it’s frequently an indication of trust, fondness and even a protective instinct while you rest.
In the video, the creator explains: “Most people think it’s just because it’s comfy or warm there, but the real reason is much sweeter.”
They add that by sleeping at your feet, your cat is choosing a position that allows them to feel both safe and alert.
They said: “They can see the door, stay alert to any sounds, and still be close to you. It’s their way of saying, ‘I’m watching over you while you sleep’.”
While the notion of your cat serving as a nocturnal guardian may sound adorable, animal behaviour specialists suggest there’s genuine validity to this theory.
According to certified cat behaviour consultant Kate Luse, security is amongst the primary reasons cats favour the foot of the bed.
Despite being accomplished hunters, cats are also prey animals in nature and have developed instincts to select sleeping locations that enable them to monitor their surroundings.
The foot of the bed frequently provides them with an unobstructed view of the room and, crucially, the doorway.
This allows them to remain relaxed while staying alert to anything that might catch their attention – but that’s not the only reason behind the behaviour.
Veterinarian Dr Nicole Savageau explains that many cats also gravitate towards the foot of the bed because it offers them the ideal balance between companionship and personal space.
While some cats adore snuggling up on their owner’s chest or pillow, others find that degree of closeness a little too much to handle.
Settling at your feet allows them to remain near the person they trust most without feeling hemmed in.
Temperature can also be a contributing factor, as cats instinctively seek out warm spots to rest, and your feet tend to provide just the right amount of warmth to keep them comfortable throughout the night.
Experts also point out that your scent plays a significant role.
As your bed carries your smell so strongly, it creates a reassuring environment in which your cat feels safe and at ease.
The TikTok video struck a chord with cat owners, with many immediately recognising the behaviour.
One user said: “My cats sleep in different spots, but always on the bed. Always close by. And I also have a pretty serious illness, so they’ve actually learned when something’s wrong.
“They can wake my husband up if something happens. Tiny fluffy emergency alarms with fur and attitude.”
Another user added: “2/3 of my kitties stay by my feet while the third lays all over the bed so long as the covers are bunched up and she snuggles in them.”
A third user said: “Mine sleeps by my head, back, ribs, behind my knees. Basically all over me.”
