Co-op has unveiled a new initiative to help customers save money while tackling food waste. The supermarket has launched £3 “Second Chance Saver Bags” in selected stores across the UK through an exclusive partnership with Deliveroo.

The new mystery produce bags, available from Wednesday, June 10, contain a mix of six to eight fruit and vegetable items nearing the end of their shelf life but still perfectly good to eat. By offering these products at a significantly reduced price, Co-op hopes to prevent edible food from going to waste while providing shoppers with affordable access to fresh produce.

Each bag costs just £3 and could contain products with an original value of up to approximately £32, depending on the contents. The retailer said the value of the items included will always exceed £5, ensuring customers save at least £2 compared with the reduced-to-clear price.

Typical contents may include premium fruit and vegetables such as Irresistible Best of British Tomatoes, Fairtrade Organic Bananas, Irresistible Strawberries, Tenderstem Broccoli, Baking Potatoes and Sweet and Crunchy Salad.

Kate McCrae, retail director at Co-op, said the initiative addresses several key priorities for customers. “Saving money, eating healthily and reducing food waste are all important matters to our member owners and our Second Chance Saver Bags will help shoppers to do all three with ease,” she said.

“We’re extremely proud to be pioneering this new initiative exclusively with Deliveroo and look forward to seeing the response from our members and customers that shop with us through the platform.”

Deliveroo said the partnership supports its commitment to delivering value while promoting more sustainable shopping habits.

Suzy McClintock, vice president of consumer and new verticals at Deliveroo, said: “At Deliveroo, we’re always looking for innovative ways to offer our customers great value on quality products and Co-op’s Second Chance Saver Bags do just that while also actively reducing food waste.

“We’re proud to launch this trial in exclusive partnership with Co-op and help give our local communities a way to eat well, spend less and shop sustainably.”

The launch forms part of Co-op’s wider pledge to halve food waste by 2030. The retailer is a signatory to WRAP’s Food Waste Reduction Roadmap and works with a range of charity and community organisations to redistribute surplus food, including Felix, City Harvest, The Bread & Butter Thing, Company Shop and hundreds of local groups through Caboodle.

The trial will initially run in 20 Co-op stores across locations including London, Manchester, Sheffield, Brighton, Wakefield and Worcester. If successful, the retailer plans to expand the programme across more stores nationwide.

Co-op, which is owned by around seven million active member-owners, operates more than 2,300 food stores across the UK and employs approximately 53,000 people. The business generated annual revenues of more than £11 billion and continues to position itself as a leader in ethical retailing and community-focused initiatives.

The Second Chance Saver Bags are available to order through the Deliveroo platform in participating locations from June 10, 2026.
