Doctor’s summer warning to Brits suffering from common issue

As temperatures across the UK begin to rise and the country starts to heat up, there are certain health conditions whose underlying symptoms may be brought to the fore during the summer months. With one in three Brits affected by varicose veins, a doctor has issued a warning to those suffering from the condition and shared how to effectively manage its symptoms as the weather warms up.

Varicose veins develop when veins become swollen and contorted, frequently presenting as raised, blue-tinged lines visible beneath the skin. They are chiefly caused by underlying issues, typically weakened vein walls and defective valves, though factors such as genetics, age, lifestyle, and pregnancy can all play a role in their development.

While varicose veins are a concern throughout the year, symptoms can frequently deteriorate and become more apparent as temperatures climb.

Dr Mark Bratby, Consultant Interventional Radiologist at VeinCentre, explains: “Warmer temperatures cause your veins to dilate more, meaning as your veins get larger, the valves struggle even more to deal with blood flow.

“This leads to more accumulation of blood inside your veins, resulting in swelling, bigger bulges, and ultimately greater discomfort.”

Beyond the uncomfortable symptoms that can cause restlessness and irritation, many varicose vein sufferers also find their self-consciousness heightens during the warmer months, as they remove layers of clothing to stay cool.

Dr Bratby said: “For those who don’t have varicose veins, it’s easy to think that the impact is simply physical, but often weighs heavily on patients’ mental health.

“It can be a dent in people’s confidence levels, as the veins become more visible when they expand, making some feel apprehensive about wearing clothes that expose their legs and feet.”

Nevertheless, there are several ways to manage varicose veins during warmer weather, ranging from straightforward adjustments to your daily routine through to seeking medical treatment.

Stay cool and hydrated

The most obvious remedy for overheating is to attempt to bring your temperature down. Stay out of direct sunlight wherever possible to prevent your veins from dilating excessively, and drink plenty of water to remain properly hydrated.

Dr Bratby added: “If you’re on holiday in a warm country, try and get in the pool or paddle in the sea to lower your body temperature.”

Exercise regularly

While the thought of exercising is often the last thing we want to entertain in the heat, it can actually prove highly beneficial for those suffering with varicose veins.

Dr Bratby shared: “Staying active can be beneficial for your veins, as it gets your heart pumping and encourages better blood flow, which will help your circulatory system to clear some of the blood that accumulates in your varicose veins.”

Elevate your legs

This is a more straightforward adjustment than some of the aforementioned tips, and can be effortlessly incorporated into your daily life.

Dr Bratby advised: “Elevating your legs when you’re sitting or lying down will give your veins a helping hand getting your blood back to your heart.

“It’s also beneficial to avoid standing up for prolonged periods, so make sure you have multiple breaks if you are out and about during the warmer weather.”

For many sufferers, the discomfort — not merely during the summer months but throughout the entire year — can become unbearable, particularly as symptoms are only likely to deteriorate with time.
