US President Donald Trump was met with boos as he walked onto the field for the World Cup trophy presentation, before worming into the winner’s trophy celebration.

Trump took the pitch on Sunday, July 20, in Newark, New Jersey, with FIFA head Gianni Infantino to present Spain with the golden trophy after their 1-0 win over Argentina.

The Spanish side beat the former winners in extra time after Ferran Torres scored the first goal of the match. Argentina was forced to play with one man down after Enzo Fernandez was sent off in the 93rd minute.

In a video shared on the social media platform X, Trump and Infantino were met with boos from the crowd of football fans after the World Cup, which was riddled with political controversy.

Trump went on to congratulate the players and take part in the medal ceremony before he and Infantino handed the trophy to the winners.

However, after Trump shook players’ hands and pumped his fists in the air, he refused to exit the stand.

Infantino attempted to guide the US leader away from the team as he lingered to the right of the squad, stealing their moment of celebration.

Earlier in the tournament, Infantino rejected the notion that he was involved in overturning US striker Folarin Balogun’s red card ban, despite being called by Trump.

Balogun was sent off during the US win over Bosnia and Herzegovina and was expected to miss their last-16 clash. That was until FIFA confirmed that they suspended that punishment for a year.

Trump lauded the decision, called referee Raphael Claus “a little bit suspect,” and expressed gratitude to FIFA. “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
