Drunk son demands money for booze off mum who dies after he ‘rips off earrings in attack’ | World | News

A 78-year-old woman died after her son allegedly ripped gold earrings from her ears when she refused to give him money to buy alcohol. The incident happened in Pathiri village, near Vandavasi in Tiruvannamalai district, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Police said the woman was living alone after the death of her husband several years ago. According to investigators, her 47-year-old son, a truck driver, went to her home on July 28 while allegedly under the influence of alcohol and demanded money.

Police said the pensioner told him she could not give him any cash.

Officers allege he then assaulted his mother before forcibly tearing a pair of four-gram gold stud earrings from her ears and fleeing the scene.

The woman suffered serious injuries to her earlobes and she lost a significant amount of blood, police said.

Neighbours came to her aid and took her to the Government General Hospital in Vandavasi, where she received treatment.

However, her condition later worsened and she died on July 31.

The woman’s daughter later reported the incident to Vandavasi (North) Police. Police then arrested the 47-year-old on Saturday morning and have charged him with murder.
