Emma Raducanu immediately signs up for two tournaments after crashing out of French Open | Tennis | Sport

Emma Raducanu has already signed up for two more tournaments following her early exit at the French Open. The young Brit was dumped out in the opening round by Solana Sierra, losing in straight sets. She was nowhere near her best at any point during the match and was bagelled in the first set as she slipped to a 6-0 7-6 defeat.

The one-time US Open winner fought back tears in her post-match press conference and was clearly upset with the one-sided manner of her exit. Afterwards, it was revealed by BBC Sport reporter Russell Fuller that Raducanu has signed up for two additional tournaments in the build-up to Wimbledon.

She is reportedly set to compete in Berlin and Eastbourne after Queen’s Club before returning to SW19 at the end of June.

Raducanu also spoke to BBC Sport about her defeat to Sierra and sounded downbeat as she reflected on another missed opportunity.

“I haven’t fully processed it yet but I think I have to at least take the fact that I fought back from a set down,” she said. “I think it was difficult coming in with so little matches and preparation under my belt at the back end of the clay season.”

Raducanu was seen coughing on court at times during the match and has only just returned to competitive tennis after two months out with a post-viral illness.

“It is what it is,” she added. “I don’t think it was a physical thing. I’ve just had this cough that hasn’t gone away and has been lingering. It’s just annoying but I didn’t feel unfit out there.

“It was a matter of tennis and getting off the blocks extremely slowly. When you feel like the match is running away from you, it’s very hard to try and re-focus.

“I made the decision six weeks ago and started practicing again after two months off. I was like: ‘Okay, I want to play the French Open’, so I guess this comes with it.

“The match practice hopefully helps so as long as I can keep my head up and keep approaching each match in the right way, apply myself well every day like I have been, it will have been a good decision. It’s just a matter of letting myself not get too down on it.”
