England fans chant ‘Starmer’s a w*****’ during World Cup warm-up against Costa Rica | Football | Sport

England enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 victory over Costa Rica in their final World Cup warm-up on Thursday night, but it was the Three Lions supporters who also grabbed attention.

Thomas Tuchel’s side maintained their perfect start to qualifying with a professional display, dispatching their Central American opponents thanks to goals from Ollie Watkins, Anthony Gordon and Declan Rice.

However, as the action unfolded on the pitch, thousands of fans inside the stadium could be heard singing “Keir Starmer‘s a w*****” to the tune of The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army.

The anti-Prime Minister song has become an increasingly common feature at England matches in recent months.

Neither the Football Association nor Downing Street have commented on it.

The match was delayed by an hour because of severe weather in Orlando, Florida.

Heavy rain and lightning in the area triggered local safety protocols, forcing spectators to take shelter and pushing kick-off back from 4pm local time (9pm BST) to 5pm local time (10pm BST).

Under US guidelines, play cannot begin while lightning is detected within a certain radius of the stadium.

It came as England continued to build momentum under Tuchel, who is aiming to guide the Three Lions to World Cup glory in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The tournament officially begins on Thursday when co-hosts Mexico play South Africa. England’s first match against Croatia on Wednesday, 17 June (21:00 BST).
