Everything you need to know about potential kick-off delays for England vs Mexico at the World Cup…

  1. England are set to take on Mexico at the Estadio Azteca at 6pm local time (1am BST Monday). It comes as a round of 16 clash between the two nations, who each vie for a spot in the quarter-finals.
  2. AccuWeather’s forecast in Coyoacan reads: “Overcast with occasional rain and a thunderstorm later this afternoon; lightning from nearby storms may impact the soccer match.”
  3. Express Sport reporters at the scene of the clash have reported heavy rain and lightning local to the Azteca. Pictures from inside the ground also show downpours pounding the stadium.
  4. Signs outside the Estadio Azteca earlier displayed a warning which read: “Protocolo de tormenta electrica activado,” which translates to ‘electrical storm protocol activated.’
  5. Nobody is currently allowed onto the playing surface as a result of the protocol being activated. Media staff have also been told to stay inside the stadium’s media centre until there is an improvement in conditions.
  6. Supporters have also been prevented from making their way into the stadium, despite gates being scheduled to open three hours ahead of kick-off (10pm BST).
  7. Reports claim that the team arrivals at the ground were delayed due to storms in the locality. Both sets of players have since arrived.
  8. As per local laws, if lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius, action cannot take place for at least 30 minutes after the last detection. That goes before or after a ball has been kicked.
  9. There has not been an announcement of a delay just yet, but that could change depending on the circumstances.
