Thomas Tuchel is poised to prove his tactical fearlessness tonight as England look to lock down top spot in Group L against a Panama side eliminated from the World Cup. Following the toothless 0-0 stalemate against Ghana, the German head coach is under pressure to inject some serious energy back into the Three Lions’ tournament campaign.

With midfielder Declan Rice nursing a dead leg and Reece James‘ injury history, both men are expected to be protected ahead of the knockout phases. As a result, the stage is set for some interesting changes to the starting line-up in New Jersey at 10pm BST tonight (Saturday, June 27). To see exactly how a rotated side would perform, we took to the virtual dugout on EA Sports FC 26.

The simulation certainly delivered with plenty of talking points, reports the Mirror.

Our simulated tactical projection saw Tuchel make some bold calls, as he called up veteran Jordan Henderson to help in central midfield.

Djed Spence started at right-back in place of James but Bukayo Saka was unleashed from the whistle for his first tournament start.

England simulated starting XI v Panama: Jordan Pickford; Djed Spence, Ezri Konsa, John Stones, Nico O’Reilly; Jordan Henderson, Elliot Anderson; Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford; Harry Kane.

It took just four minutes for the virtual gamble to pay dividends. Anderson pounced on a loose parry from an uncharacteristic Kane miss, quickly feeding the ball to Bellingham at the penalty spot.

The Real Madrid superstar clinically fired a first-time effort off the bar and into the net to hand England the advantage. The opening half had plenty more drama in store.

England dominated the opening period, though Panama goalkeeper Luis Mejia temporarily proved a stubborn obstacle, denying Saka on three separate occasions. Anderson even had an international goal chalked off for offside after heading a Henderson chipped through ball into the net.

The breakthrough finally came in the 41st minute, with Saka calmly converting after being brilliantly set up by an audacious no-look, first-time pass from Bellingham. Yet rather than heading into the interval with a two-goal cushion, England were pegged back mere seconds before the whistle.

A momentary lapse in concentration at the back allowed Godoy to break through, and he fired home despite Pickford managing to get a hand to it.

A five-star feast for England fans

Any lingering half-time anxiety vanished rapidly in the second period as the Three Lions went on a ruthless five-goal rampage. Kane finally found the net in the 51st minute, finishing emphatically after Rashford and Bellingham linked up to release him six yards out, putting England 3-1 ahead.

The fourth goal arrived swiftly, as Rashford tapped into an empty net following Saka’s close-range effort being saved by Mejia on 57 minutes.

With just over 20 minutes remaining, Tuchel opted to withdraw Kane, Saka and Anderson. Ollie Watkins, Noni Madueke and Kobbie Mainoo entered the fray, with two of those replacements proving crucial in the dying stages.

Drama arrived in the 71st minute when Watkins saw his effort blocked by the hand of Panama defender Jose Cordoba. In a moment that stunned the nation, Bellingham uncharacteristically skied his spot-kick high and wide.

Fortunately, the Madrid talisman redeemed himself almost immediately, setting up Watkins for a neat fifth just moments later.

Just four minutes later, on the 78th minute, Mainoo opened his England account with a composed finish across the keeper.

With the outcome firmly settled, Tuchel withdrew Bellingham and O’Reilly for a well-deserved breather, with Morgan Rogers and Reece James introduced for the final 10 minutes.

There was still time for one more, as Madueke grabbed his second England goal with a precise finish just inside the penalty area.

A stunning 7-1 victory for England, matching the biggest win in the tournament so far and sealing their place in the knockout rounds as unbeaten group winners.

If the real-world execution is even half as clinical tonight, England will march into the Round of 32 full of momentum.
