England World Cup squad: Palmer, Foden and Gibbs-White snub debated | Football | Sport
Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Morgan Gibbs-White are among the biggest casualties. Reports emerging on Thursday evening claim that Eberechi Eze has been picked ahead of the trio, with Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers also expected to be named in Tuchel’s squad on Friday.
Both Palmer and Foden have endured mixed seasons, with moments of brilliance often dwarfed by absences through injury or poor performances.
Gibbs-White, however, has played a starring role for Nottingham Forest. His 14 Premier League goals, coupled with four assists, have kept them in the division and he has every right to feel scorned.
Meanwhile, the likes of Harry Maguire, Adam Wharton, Jarrod Bowen, Luke Shaw and Lewis Hall are all set to miss out on a trip to the States.
According to various reports, Ivan Toney, Noni Madueke, Anthony Gordon, Jordan Henderson, Dan Burn, Jarrell Quansah and John Stones have made the cut.
What do you think? Has Tuchel made the right decision to leave out big names such as Foden, Palmer and Gibbs-White? Vote in our poll below. And have your say in the comments too.
As ever, the England squad’s announcement will be met with plenty of debate. But rarely have so many big names, with big moments in them, been overlooked at a World Cup.
Many of England’s rivals would be overjoyed to build their team around Foden or Palmer. But instead, Tuchel has opted to go in a different direction.
Only time will tell if his picks end up justified or whether 60 years will pass without another World Cup win, following that famous 1966 victory.
Tuchel has put his beliefs on the line. The former Chelsea boss clearly has no time for reputations and does not care about public opinion.
Whatever the outcome, he has put everything on the line.
