Erling Haaland humiliated by Gary Lineker after brutal comment | Football | Sport

Gary Lineker has piled on the misery for Erling Haaland after missing an absolute sitter in the Manchester derby for City this afternoon in the Premier League. Marcus Rashford’s screamer put Utd ahead at the Etihad before the Norwegian striker’s gaffe.

Just prior to half-time, Haaland looked set to equalise from close range after Phil Foden’s clever header across the goal. However, inexplicably, the City talisman managed to blaze his volley over the crossbar with the whole goal to aim for from just a couple of yards out.

He immediately put his heads in his hands as City fans and team-mates couldn’t believe what they had just seen. Inevitably it led to plenty of chatter on social media, and former England striker and Match of the Day host Lineker had his say too.

He issued a brutal comment in the direction of Haaland, saying on X (formerly Twitter): “That might be the worst miss I’ve ever seen at this level. @ErlingHaaland has to head it. Incredible.”

It was very uncharacteristic from Haaland but fortunately for the 23-year-old, he made amends late on. His side found their way back into the game through Foden in the 56th minute.

Foden then scored his second of the game to put the hosts 2-1 ahead in the 80th minute following fine build-up play down the left, before Haaland finally got his goal with a neat finish in injury-time as City continue to put the pressure on Liverpool and Arsenal in the title race.

But Haaland’s miss won’t be forgotten any time soon, and Gary Neville and Roy Keane were left speechless by it. “Oh my gosh. What has he just done. What has he not done,” Neville said during Sky Sports’ commentary. “They’ve been working it and working it and finally we thought they got perfection. Until that. He missed chances a few weeks ago against Chelsea.”

“Pep Guardiola cannot believe it. It’s a startling thing we’ve just seen. Is he trying to put it into the top of the net? Is he trying to be clever?”

Meanwhile, fellow Utd icon Keane rubbed salt into Haaland’s wounds. “This is unbelievable. I can’t explain it,’ Keane said at half-time on Sky Sports. “He just has to head it or a softer touch. He’s probably thinking he’s already scored.”

And Micah Richards added: “Look at the reaction from Rodri, he can’t believe it. Haaland as well in disbelief.”
