Football Focus ‘is a sad loss but it has been eminently missable for y | Football | Sport
So the final whistle has been sounded on another television sporting institution. Football Focus was a staple of my Saturday lunchtime in my younger years. It was a must-watch before dashing out to play some sport in the afternoon, or dare I say a TV pick-me-up after a late night out.
It had some amazing presenters – the legendary Bob Wilson, of course, and then the brilliant Steve Ryder.
And they got some cracking insight into the sport at the highest level with some top-name interviews as well as whetting your appetite nicely for the weekend games. For fans of the game, it was a must-watch.
Not any more. It is a sad loss but no surprise as it has been eminently missable in recent years.
First, the far-too-cheery Dan Walker made me want to switch off immediately, and then they handed Alex Scott the poisoned chalice.
She did her best to revive a dead duck killed off by the BBC‘s determination to be a national broadcaster that covers the nation’s sport.
Cricket test matches went ages ago, then the Grand National and the Boat race…only Wimbledon remains for now for the Beeb to own and shout about.
Let’s be honest. The BBC stopped properly covering sport years ago – poor old Football Focus is just the latest sad victim of a deep-rooted malaise.
