Henderson offers new update on England injury as he wears massive cast | Football | Sport

Henderson was attempting to leap over an advertising hoarding during celebrations at the Estadio Azteca when he lost his footing and crashed down with his arm taking the impact. He has since had surgery on the injury, with his World Cup participation widely believed to be finished. Yet the Brentford midfielder hinted at a potential return under Thomas Tuchel this summer, ahead of England’s quarter-final encounter with Norway in Miami.

Providing an update on his condition while speaking to ITV, he said: “It’s alright, thanks. Not my finest hour I know. Main job was to go there and win, progress, that’s the main thing.

“A tough couple of days. Soon as I came back to camp to see the lads, we’ve got a great medical team, the DRs and surgeons in Kansas were amazing. Grateful for that, delighted to be here today.”

When pressed on the challenge facing England and what will be required against Norway, he continued: “Same thing we showed in the last game, the resilience and character, obstacles that we overcome. We have to do the same again, tough test for us. If we’re the best version of ourselves, I’m confident we’ll get through.”

When quizzed on the daunting prospect of keeping Erling Haaland quiet, he went on: “It is a challenge, he’s one of the best in the world but they’ve got top top players. For us, we have to concentrate, do our job and get through to the semi.”

Meanwhile, asked whether he would be fit enough to feature for England should they overcome Norway on Saturday evening and face either Argentina or Switzerland in the semi-finals, he said with a smile: “We’ll cross that bridge if we come to it.”

It comes as Tuchel has been forced to make several alterations to his starting line-up for the clash against Norway in Miami. Ezri Konsa has been deployed at right-back to cover for the absent Jarell Quansah – the Bayer Leverkusen defender unable to represent England until the final owing to a two-match ban stemming from a straight red card received against Mexico.

John Stones consequently steps in alongside Marc Guehi at centre-half. Despite battling a bout of illness that has disrupted his build-up to the match, Declan Rice has been handed a starting berth in the heart of midfield alongside Elliot Anderson, with Jude Bellingham tasked with making his presence felt as a No. 10.

Noni Madueke also comes into the side in place of Bukayo Saka on the right wing, his Arsenal colleague being carefully managed in terms of playing time as England enter the final stretch of the 2026 World Cup.
