A girl was allegedly gang raped and murdered inside her own home. Police have arrested five suspects in connection with the reported attack as investigations continue.

The girl, 15, was discovered dead inside her home on Saturday (August 1). She was found with fatal head and face injuries, as well as an iron rod inserted inside her. The victim is believed to have been raped before being bludgeoned to death with a heavy object. Officers have arrested five men, but are continuing to investigate the circumstances around the alleged attack.

As reported by The Star, the girl was allegedly raped and murdered in the Indian state of Assam. It led to a major protest with locals calling for urgent police intervention.

It’s reported that the teenage victim was at a relative’s house on Saturday before returning home early after getting into an argument with her cousin. She was then found lying in a pool of blood when her parents got back later that night.

They immediately called emergency services, but the girl was pronounced dead after suffering severe head and face injuries. Detectives launched an immediate investigation and have tracked down five suspects in connection with what happened.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amitabh Sinha told reporters: “The family claims she was sexually assaulted, but we are waiting for the post-mortem report before drawing any conclusions. We are investigating the matter thoroughly.”

On Monday (August 3), furious locals blocked a local motorway and demanded the arrest and strict punishment of the attackers. They caused major traffic congestion and left hundreds of vehicles stranded for several hours.

Hailakandi Police confirmed five people have been arrested and remain in custody. Hailakandi is a town located in the southern region of Assam and has a population of around 660,000 people.
