Three men have been arrested after a young girl in India was sexually assaulted. On June 17, in the city of Bhubaneswar, the three accused men allegedly involved in the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in Odisha’s Sundargarh district were arrested within hours of receiving the complaint, police said on Wednesday.
According to police, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Talasara village under Dharuadihi Police Station limits, reports United News of India.
The girl, 17, had gone to an open area near a riverbank in the village at about 3.30pm when she was allegedly approached by three residents, the police complaint states.
Police said the victim then later returned home and told her family about the incident, leading to her mother filing a complaint at Dharuadihi Police Station at around 7PM that evening.
After the complaint was lodged, the Superintendent of Police personally spoke to the girl, visited the location of the crime and then directed immediate action, with multiple teams formed to trace the accused.
Under the supervision of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), teams from Dharuadihi Police Station and nearby police stations launched a coordinated operation. During this, they apprehended all three accused residents of Talasara village by about 9.30pm, police said. Only a matter of hours after the incident had occurred.
The formal registration of the case was completed later that evening at 11.36 pm. The three accused men have been taken into custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated, police stated.
They also made it known that an investigation is underway, including the collection of forensic and other corroborative evidence. Authorities explained that the victim has been provided with medical assistance as well as ongoing psychological support.
