A stampede at a World Cup fan gathering in Jordan’s capital left one person dead and eight others injured early on Tuesday, according to the state news agency.

Thousands of supporters had descended on central Amman to watch the clash between Algeria and Jordan on giant screens. The crowd at Hashemite Plaza swelled, and nine people injured in the crush were rushed to hospital, the Jordan News Agency reported, citing the Public Security Directorate.

One of the injured supporters subsequently died, the report confirmed, while the others sustained minor to moderate injuries.

Experts ​were investigating to determine the ​exact ⁠cause of death, it added.

Large crowds of spectators had gathered across the capital ⁠to ​follow the match, ​with Jordan competing in their first World Cup.

The nation’s hopes were dashed on Tuesday after a 2-1 defeat to Algeria saw them eliminated from the tournament.

Jordan took the lead in the 36th minute when Nizar Al-Rashdan found the back of the net, but Algeria battled back in the second half.

Goals from Nadhir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri turned the tie on its head and sent Jordan crashing out of the World Cup.

They currently sit fourth in Group J on zero points, having lost both of their matches so far.

Jordan will round off their World Cup campaign against reigning champions Argentina in the early hours of Sunday morning.
