Two men have been arrested after a young woman was allegedly gang raped while on an outing with a male friend. The shocking attack was filmed on a camera and later shown to other people, according to police in India.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla Gurinderpal Singh told reporters that the alleged attack took place on July 3 before being reported three weeks later. The woman alleges that she had gone to a picnic spot with a male friend when they were accosted by two men who assaulted the man and forced him to flee before sexually assaulting the woman. The alleged assault happened in the Baramulla district of Indian-administered Kashmir after the woman and her friend visited the Jalsheeri Drangbal area, police said.
Mr Singh said: “The victim knew the accused only by their first names,..
“We relied on technical evidence, scientific methods and human intelligence to establish their identities.”
He added: “The accused allegedly chased away her companion before sexually assaulting her one after another while filming the act.”
Police said that the victim had initially been reluctant to report the attack to police out of fear for her safety after being threatened by the accused.
Since reporting the attack, police say that they have formed a team to protect the woman and ensure her personal safety.
Singh said the investigation initially proved challenging as the survivor knew the suspects only by their first names. However, he said sustained efforts involving technical evidence and human intelligence enabled police to identify the accused, who were arrested on Monday.
Two men remain in police custody as investigations continue.
Police said both accused were arrested on Monday and have allegedly confessed to the crime during interrogation. The mobile phone allegedly used to record the assault has also been recovered.
Investigators are currently collecting scientific, medical and digital evidence and have taken the accused to the alleged crime scene to reconstruct the sequence of events, according to local media.
