Horror as woman gang-raped on bus – driver among those arrested | World | News


A woman was allegedly gang-raped while on board a bus in a major city. Police have confirmed two people have been arrested following the reported attack, including the driver of the bus.

Officers were called to the scene in Delhi, India, in the early hours of Tuesday, May 12, in response to reports that the woman had been raped by two men while inside the bus. They arrived and immediately arrested two suspects before taking them to custody shortly before 5am. The bus was also seized while the police investigation is ongoing.

As reported by The News Mill, the bus was operating between Rani Bagh and Nangloi when the alleged attack took place.

Local police officer Vikram Singh said: “On May 12, a PCR call was received in which the caller alleged that she had been sexually assaulted by two persons.

“Immediate police assistance and help were provided to the victim, and a case was registered at Police Station Rani Bagh. Both the accused persons involved in the crime were immediately arrested. Strict action is being taken against the accused persons.”

The bus was operating on a Delhi-to-Bihar route, with the victim reportedly boarding at Rani Bagh. Shortly after getting on board, she was allegedly raped by two men.

Local media have identified the suspects as Ramendra, who was the bus driver, and Umesh. They were both arrested and remain in police custody pending an investigation.

The force added that the bus, where the alleged rape took place, has been seized. Detectives have since taken a full statement from the victim, and their investigation remains ongoing.

Delhi, with a metropolitan population of around 35 million, is the second-largest city in the world. The National Capital Territory of Delhi spans over 1,484 square kilometres (573 square miles).
