As someone who loves movies more than life itself, I pride myself on being ahead of the curve with film releases. This summer has been better than the past (never forget Barbenheimer 2023, however), with the release of Christopher Nolan’s grand and starry adaptation of The Odyssey, a new Spider-Man film coming next week and a British coming-of-age indie-style film that dropped earlier in the season.

With the summer being such a hit for cinema, I do not doubt that the rest of the year will follow suit. Here are my top five most exciting films still to come this year, and you won’t want to miss them.

A not-so-typical biopic detailing the life of chef, author and TV presenter Anthony Bourdain is set to hit screens in August.

The film’s plot reads: “A 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain travels to Provincetown and stumbles into the chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen, setting off a summer that will shape the course of his life.”

Dominic Sessa, who shot to fame after his role in The Holdovers, will star as a young Anthony Bourdain, alongside Antonio Banderas as Ciro, the chef and restaurant owner who chooses to mentor Tony, Emilia Jones as Nancy, Bourdain’s love interest, as well as Leo Woodall and Stavros Halkias, who play fellow restaurant workers.

Matt Johnson directs, from a script by Todd Bartels and Lou Howe. The film is inspired by Bourdain’s book Kitchen Confidential, which details his journey into the culinary world and exposes the gritty reality of professional kitchens.

Tony is released in UK cinemas on August 14.

The upcoming reboot of Sense and Sensibility, a romantic period drama film directed by Georgia Oakley from a screenplay by Diana Reid. It is, of course, based on the 1811 novel by Jane Austen. The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esmé Creed-Miles, Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane, George MacKay, and Fiona Shaw.

The film’s premise reads: “From Focus Features and Working Title comes an irresistible new take on Jane Austen’s iconic Sense and Sensibility: a charming, witty, and deeply relatable story of love and sisterhood starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles.”

Sense and Sensibility will be released on September 25.

The Social Reckoning serves as a standalone companion piece to the iconic 2010 hit The Social Network. The biographical drama thriller film was written, co-produced, and directed by Aaron Sorkin. It stars Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr, and Jeremy Strong.

The film’s plot reads: “A companion piece to the hit film, The Social Network, Sorkin’s original screenplay tells the true story of how Frances Haugen (Madison), a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (Allen White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.”

The Social Reckoning will be out in cinemas on October 9.

Now I am not often one for a blockbuster, but I have been very excited about this release. The Hunger Games is set to return in November with Sunrise on the Reaping, a movie largely focusing on the character of Haymitch.

Directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie. The sixth instalment in The Hunger Games film series, it stars an ensemble cast that includes Joseph Zada, Jesse Plemons, Elle Fanning, Kieran Culkin, McKenna Grace, Whitney Peak, Ben Wang, Maya Hawke, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Ralph Fiennes, and Glenn Close.

The film’s synopsis reads: “THE HUNGER GAMES: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING revisits the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.”

Sunrise on the Reaping is out on November 20.

The highly anticipated Dune: Part Three was co-produced and directed by Denis Villeneuve, who co-wrote the screenplay with Brian K. Vaughan. It is based on the 1969 novel Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert. The film stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach de Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson, and Javier Bardem.

The synopsis reads: “Dune: Part Three is set nearly two decades after Paul Atreides seized control of the Imperium. Now a ruthless Emperor, Paul must face the consequences of his reign as old allies return, terrifying new threats emerge, and betrayal lurks in every shadow. Haunted by visions of Imperial collapse and the reappearance of his long-lost love, Paul is drawn into a sweeping conspiracy, with Chani at the heart of its unfolding mystery. As rebellion brews and enemies close in, Paul must confront the true cost of power and the fate of those he loves the most.”

Dune: Part Three will be released on December 16.
