Incredible film that’s ‘the best gangster movie since The Godfather’ | Films | Entertainment
The Godfather is not only the most notorious gangster film of all time but is often described as one of the greatest films in history. The 1972 classic, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, broke box-office records and was the biggest-grossing film of its year of release. It has won numerous top awards, including five at the 30th Golden Globe Awards and Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or TV Special at the 15th Grammy Awards.
The classic has been noted as the most influential force in the gangster genre. Yet a film currently available on Amazon Prime has been named the best gangster movie since The Godfather.
According to Comic Book Resources, a 1996 Danish film and its two sequels “make one of the best gangster movie trilogies of all time”. Pusher, which was director Nicolas Winding Refn’s debut feature, uses three “pushers” or drug dealers, called Frank, Tonny, and Milo, to explore Copenhagen’s drug-dealing scene, and how those involved in it are “people with substance-use disorders themselves”.
Each film has one of the three main characters at the forefront, uncovering their personal stories. “Much like the greatest trilogy of all time, The Godfather, the Pusher trilogy also sees an escalation of the stakes from film to film,” the website adds.
Amazon Prime subscribers can stream the entire film collection for free. The first Pusher has been rated an impressive 4 out of 5 stars and praised by fans as “excellent” and “raw.”
“A dark, gritty and violent drama of such quality that I was left to wonder why it has taken me over twenty years to see this film!
“Despite the protagonist’s loathsome behaviour, I still felt sympathy for him as the story unfolded. That I was emotionally invested in such a scumbag is testimony to the quality of the film. I look forward to seeing the sequel,” one viewer wrote.
Another branded it as “one of the best movies [they have] ever seen”.
One viewer commended the film’s “documentary feel”.
They wrote: “A raw, intense, stylish and hard-edged thriller. An interesting look into the life of a drug dealer, Pusher takes a typical story and makes it unique, thanks to it’s documentary feel.
“The director, Nicolas Winding Refn crafts a bold, compelling, twisty and slick crime story. With no experience before, Pusher is an electrifying debut of very talented and promising talent.
“Kim Bodnia, the guy that plays Frank, is nothing short of phenomenal. There’s no performance in this movie that’s below great.”
