Iran attacks Trump’s Strait of Hormuz claim with huge WW3 threat – ‘Dire consequences’ | World | News

Iran has issued a threat of “dire consequences” as Tehran rages against Donald Trump’s claim that the Strait of Hormuz will never be closed again.

Seyyed Mohammad Mehdi Tabatabaei, a spokesperson for Iran’s president, has lashed out at the “baseless statements of the enemy”, shortly after Mr Trump said Iran had agreed never to close the Strait of Hormuz again.

“The conditional and limited reopening of a portion of the Strait of Hormuz is solely an Iranian initiative, one that creates responsibility and serves to test the firm commitments of the opposing side,” Tabatabaei said on X. “If they renege on their promises, they will face dire consequences.”

Writing on Truth Social earlier today (April 17), the US President said “Iran has agreed to never close the Strait of Hormuz again. It will no longer be used as a weapon against the World! President DONALD J. TRUMP”.

Tabatabaei also suggested that Trump’s statements were “aimed at stripping the Iranian nation of their sense of pride for the great victories they have achieved through their resolute defence”.

In Iran, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz was linked to the ceasefire in Lebanon. In a post shared on X, Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi seemed to link the two events.

Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, said the ceasefire in Lebanon, and the reopening of the Straits Hormuz opened pave the ground, “more or less, for comprehensive, unified and united efforts to establish permanent peace”.

• A preliminary deal could be reached in the coming days, with the possibility of extending the ceasefire, such a preliminary deal could create space for talks on lifting sanctions, securing compensation for war damages;
• Finally, Iran is ready to assure the world about the peaceful nature of its nuclear work if its demands are met.

Trump, however, writing another Truth Social post, said “Again! This deal is not tied, in any way, to Lebanon, but we will, MAKE LEBANON GREAT AGAIN!”

Trump also targeted NATO and the UK in one of his messages. One of his social media posts read: “Now that the Hormuz Strait situation is over, I received a call from NATO asking if we would need some help. I TOLD THEM TO STAY AWAY, UNLESS THEY JUST WANT TO LOAD UP THEIR SHIPS WITH OIL. They were useless when needed, a Paper Tiger! President DJT.”
