Iran threatens horror attack on Ukraine as Trump meets Zelensky in Ukr | World | News
An Iranian MP has threatened military action against Ukraine as Volodymyr Zelensky meets Donald Trump in the US. The threat comes in response to what Tehran claims was a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian merchant vessel in the Caspian Sea. Iranian politician Feda-Hossein Maleki, a member of Tehran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, told Russian state news agency RIA Novosti: “We responded through diplomatic channels, issued an ultimatum, but a military response will certainly follow.”
Maleki also claimed Iran’s armed forces had already put a military response against Kyiv “on the agenda”. Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused Ukraine of carrying out what it described as a military attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea on Saturday. Iranian officials said one sailor was killed and another was wounded in an explosion.
Iran summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran on Sunday after accusing Kyiv of attacking the vessel, according to Iranian state news agency IRNA. Iran’s Foreign Ministry described the alleged attack as “hostile and criminal”.
The allegations came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv had struck a Russian warship and vessels used to transport Iranian-linked military cargo in the Caspian Sea.
Throughout the war, Ukraine has faced repeated attacks from Iranian-designed drones used by Russia. Kyiv has also offered its drone interception expertise to countries across the Middle East that have come under attack from Iran.
The diplomatic row has intensified after Mr Zelensky accused Russia of sharing satellite intelligence with Iran to help direct strikes in the Middle East.
In a post on X, the Ukrainian president claimed Russian satellite imagery of military sites in Gulf states had been passed to Tehran before and after Iranian attacks to help prepare and assess strikes. He said Ukrainian intelligence had observed Russian surveillance of air bases in Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait earlier this month.
Mr Zelensky is holding talks with US President Donald Trump, with Ukraine’s defence and continued American support expected to dominate discussions.
