Jordan Henderson ‘heartbreaking’ injury update as England World Cup camp rocked | Football | Sport
Jordan Henderson’s World Cup could be over after he suffered a freak injury at the end of England’s gutsy win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium. The Brentford midfielder had spent the entirety of England’s clash with Mexico on the bench, but did manage to pick up a yellow card for dissent towards the referee.
It was after the heroic win at the Azteca where Henderson hurt himself, as the England man slipped while clambering over the advertising boards following a rendition of Wonderwall with the travelling fans. Social media footage shows him falling and landing on his arm, with Henderson left needing medical attention, before eventually being stretchered off the pitch.
Harry Kane explained what happened during his immediate post-match interview, but the Three Lions will have to wait to see the extent of the damage. However, there is some fear that Henderson’s World Cup might already be over, with it looking as if the midfielder has sustained a serious arm injury.
Chief football writer for the Daily Mirror, John Cross, said on the episode of Make Football Great Again: “Well, it feels like it might be [his World Cup over], to be honest. I know it’s a sort of a wrist, a stroke arm injury which, you know, you probably get in plaster and what have you, but that early stage is going to be difficult for him and as the team travels back to their base in Kansas City, Jordan Henderson is is staying behind in Mexico City to kind of have this set and repaired.
“It feels as if it it’s probably going to be his World Cup over. What an absolute hammer blow, really, because he was put up in the press conference pre-match, Tuchel clearly thinks he’s, going to say the right thing and sort of motivate the troops. I just thought, wow, that’s so heartbreaking. He’s such a good character and person and leader. I think that that’s absolutely devastating for him.”
Thomas Tuchel was also quizzed on the incident after the match, with the German saying: “Not good, not good, next thing is a right defender now with the red card, Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist, it looks really bad.”
On the red card Jarell Quansah picked up midway through the second half, as well as some of the other refereeing decisions, Tuchel let rip on the officiating team, labelling them as “not good enough”. The England boss remarked: “Just not good enough, the referees are just not good enough, the fourth official is just not good enough.
“We had three people on the VAR from South America, is that right? If this is what I saw, if this is correct… VAR overturns, a clear and obvious error for the penalty? For sure not. They didn’t even give a foul. They didn’t overturn the yellow to a red. Not good enough, the referee and the fourth official was not good enough.”
England will now rest up as they prepare to face Norway in Miami next Saturday. A victory against Erling Haaland and co. will see England through to the World Cup semi-finals for just the second time since 1990.
