Jordan Henderson injury update as England’s worst fears confirmed after freak accident | Football | Sport
Henderson was rushed to a nearby hospital and is set to undergo surgery on his affected wrist. Now, it has emerged that he has been ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup, as expected. According to Sky Sports, there is no chance that Henderson will feature in this weekend’s quarter-final against Norway or in any other match, should England win in the last eight.
It’s claimed that after he was taken to hospital, Henderson remained in Mexico City with an England staff member and didn’t travel back to Kansas City with the rest of the squad.
He had played just six minutes at the World Cup, coming on as a late substitute during the group stage victory over Panama.
Speaking after the final whistle, England boss Thomas Tuchel confirmed that Henderson’s injury was ‘really bad’ in a worrying update.
“Not good, not good, next thing is a right defender now with the red card, Jordan just fell over an injured his wrist, it looks really bad,” he said.
“He injured his wrist, he’s gone to hospital. It’s quite a serious injury. It doesn’t fit with the night. I don’t know if there will be a procedure.”
England won’t be allowed to call up another player to take Henderson’s place in the squad, with injury replacements only permitted before a team’s opening match in the tournament.
Trevoh Chalobah was drafted in as a late replacement for Tino Livramento when the Newcastle defender was injured on the eve of the World Cup.
England will be hoping to do Henderson proud by defeating Norway in their quarter-final showdown, which is set to take place on Saturday night.
That would see the Three Lions book their second World Cup final since 1990. Their most likely opponents would be Argentina or Colombia, who England beat on penalties in 2018.
