Katie Boulter addresses whether she will take Alex de Minaur’s name after secret wedding | Tennis | Sport

The secret ceremony only became public knowledge on Monday, when photos of the happy couple emerged. According to the Daily Mail, locals in the village were “sworn to secrecy” about the planned wedding. But Boulter and De Minaur are set to have a bigger bash in Europe.

Neither has posted about their wedding yet, and Boulter retains her maiden name on her social media profiles. But when they return to competition, which could be as early as this month, she could be a De Minaur.

The British No. 2 didn’t give much away when speaking ahead of Wimbledon last month, but said that she had ordered an England shirt with her own name on the back. “I’m not a De Minaur yet,” she grinned.

Asked whether she would be changing her name after tying the knot, the 29-year-old replied: “It’s a great question. We’re gonna find out. We’re gonna find out. I don’t know. That decision’s also not been made!”

While Boulter and De Minaur’s wedding celebrations reportedly aren’t over yet, they could be back on the court in less than two weeks’ time at the ATP and WTA 500 event in Washington. The Aussie world No. 5 is the defending champion of the DC Open, while the Brit wants to start the North American hard-court swing as early as she can.

“My plan is to go to Washington. I don’t want to take weeks off. I think I’m very aligned with Alex that we both want to go back to Washington,” she previously explained. “Obviously, I’m going to enjoy every minute of my own personal life, but at the same time, I’m also going to keep my head down.

“I don’t want to lose the momentum that I’ve been building this year, and I think it’s important to keep that ball rolling, and for me, I like going back to Washington. I think it’s a great week for me to get outside, get in uncomfortable situations. It’s so hot there. It’s a really good start for me going into the US swing. So yeah, I think I’ll probably go there.”

For now, the happy couple will enjoy their nuptials after a difficult time at Wimbledon. Both became emotional in their post-match press conferences, with Boulter tearing up after she lost in the first round. “I think this is the most challenging part about tennis. It’s so difficult to feel satisfied,” she said after losing to talented teenage qualifier Tyra Grant.

De Minaur, meanwhile, suffered a straight-set defeat to Flavio Cobolli in round four and said: “You go through moments in your career, times where you feel that there’s, you know, opportunities to be taken, to take the next step, to make it to the next level, to become an even better version of yourself. And to fall short constantly, you start doubting yourself.”
