Liverpool news: Decision made on big exit, bargain transfer close and sad statement | Football | Sport
Liverpool’s season is at risk of spiralling out of control, after the Reds were left reeling following Tuesday’s Champions League exit. The reigning Premier League champions have served up a lame defence of their crown, and only have European qualification to play for during the final month of the campaign.
Arne Slot’s woes were compounded in mid-week when new signing Hugo Ekitike suffered a nasty Achilles injury, which will keep the Frenchman out of the World Cup and the majority of next season. When it rains, it pours, and the mood is definitely low at Liverpool right now. As such, Express Sport have rounded up all of the latest news stories from the world of the Reds.
Richard Hughes not leaving club
Reports had surfaced that Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, was set to leave the club in the summer to take up a role at Saudi Pro League outfit, Al-Hilal. However, according to a report by talkSPORT, that is not the case, with Hughes expected to stay at Anfield and oversee the club’s summer business. Hughes has committed himself to the Liverpool project, with the board under no illusion that the rebuild will take several years to complete.
Liverpool eyeing up Marcos Senesi deal
Defence remains a problem position for Liverpool, who have suffered several injuries throughout the season. Giovanni Leoni suffered an ACL injury during the first half of the campaign, while Jeremy Jacquet, who is set to join in the summer, will undergo surgery after picking up a shoulder injury. As such, the six-time European champions are believed to be eyeing up Marcos Senesi, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season. The i Paper are reporting Anfield is his most likely destination.
Club reveal Hugo Ekitike injury update
Ekitike’s prognosis was confirmed by the club, who released an emotional statement. It read: “Liverpool FC can confirm Hugo Ekitike has sustained a serious Achilles injury. The forward had to be substituted during the first half of Tuesday’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield after a slip on the turf.
“Scans on the issue have subsequently confirmed a rupture of the Achilles tendon. Ekitike will therefore be sidelined for the remaining weeks of the club season and unable to participate at this summer’s World Cup with France.
