Madrid Open teenage star causes huge upset and blows away world No.8 in astonishing scenes | Tennis | Sport
It was a night to remember for Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar, who claimed the biggest win of his young career on home turf at the Madrid Open and then pointed his finger in the air, pumping his fists and yelling “vamos”. The 19-year-old has been making waves on the tour of late. He recently won his first title in Marrakech and followed it up with a semi-final showing at the ATP 500 event in Barcelona.
Now, at the Madrid Open, on the Manolo Santana Stadium, he’s caused one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far and beaten a top-10 player for the very first time. The teenager absolutely blew away fifth seed Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-1 in just 75 minutes, and looked cool and collected doing it.
