Cleaning the bathroom can often feel like an overwhelming chore, with numerous surfaces demanding attention including the basin, toilet, shower, bathtub, and mirrors. Shower screens, particularly, can prove devilishly challenging to clean, with watermarks, soap scum, dirt, and limescale becoming increasingly stubborn when left to build up over time.
Keeping shower glass spotless for any length of time is notoriously difficult, and we can all attest to that.Removing these unappealing marks from shower screens can be an exhausting and herculean task without the proper equipment or cleaning solutions. For those hoping to avoid expensive, chemically-loaded cleaning products with toxic ingredients, this natural DIY spray might be just the answer you’re looking for.
Ingredients and how to prepare
All you need is one cup of white vinegar, ⅓ cup of washing up liquid, eight drops of any essential oil of your choice (peppermint and citrus are two fantastic options), and some warm water.

Simply combine all the three ingredients and then pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Top it up with some warm water, but be careful not to fill the bottle all the way to the top, so that you can mix the warm water with the rest of the ingredients when you give your bottle a good shake.
How to use the natural cleaning spray
Generously spray your grimy, limescale-loaded shower screens with the natural cleaning spray and let it work its magic for anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes, minimum. The longer you leave the mix on the shower glass, the more the vinegar will effectively dissolve streaky marks, limescale and soap scum.
Once the mix has been allowed to rest on the shower glass for long enough, gently rub your shower screen with a damp cloth or natural scourer (using a harsh scourer will leave behind scratches), and then rinse the glass down with warm water. By this time, any pungent fragrance of the white vinegar should have dissipated, especially thanks to the essential oil in your spray.
To give your shower screen an extra glossy finish, give the glass one final polish with a dry towel or cloth to leave it looking shiny and immaculate.

With this natural DIY spray, you would’ve achieved excellent results without using harsh, nasty chemicals or expending your energy on excessive scrubbing.
For those looking for an alternative to white vinegar, Planet Friendly Living recommends: “The smell of vinegar fades very quickly when used in the shower spray, but if you find it unpleasant or if you don’t have any white vinegar in the house, citric acid makes a good alternative.
“Just like vinegar, citric acid works by dissolving limescale, removing hard water stains and lifting soap scum.”
Since citric acid is not as strong as vinegar, you may have to leave it on your shower glass for a longer period of time, or alternatively, use the spray more frequently to ensure the limescale gets shorter gaps to buildup on the shower screen.
