Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Kit Margetson as part of a sweeping shake-up of their goalkeeping ranks. Margetson, a Wales under-21 international, departed Swansea City earlier this month upon the expiry of his contract.
Nevertheless, Swansea will receive a compensation fee for the young stopper, having nurtured him since under-15 level under the guidance of his father Martyn, who until recently served as the Championship club’s head of goalkeeping. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Connah’s Quay Nomads, where he made 34 appearances and kept 10 clean sheets. Margetson made his debut for Wales under-21s against Belarus back in March.
The club, who are yet to disclose the duration of his contract, said in a statement: “Everyone at United would like to welcome Kit to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future.”
Margetson’s arrival represents the latest in a string of changes to the goalkeeping setup at Old Trafford. United brought in Wales international Karl Darlow from Leeds on a free transfer to provide cover for Senne Lammens, who himself only joined last year.
Former first-choice Andre Onana has been loaned back to Turkish outfit Trabzonspor, while Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek are also expected to leave in the coming weeks.
Manager Michael Carrick has already approved their exits to free up room within the first-team squad.
Bayindir has failed to establish himself over recent seasons and is looking for a permanent transfer, having not rejoined United after the World Cup.
Vitek was loaned to Championship side Bristol City last term and made a strong impression. United are believed to value the 22 year old at £10million and have attracted considerable interest in securing his signature.
He featured in United’s 5-0 pre-season victory against Rosenborg at the weekend but will be permitted to depart, with Lammens and Darlow established as first and second-choice goalkeepers and his market value elevated following his successful spell at Bristol City.
