Man Utd injury scare as squad travel for Chelsea game | Football | Sport

Kobbie Mainoo has been named in Manchester United’s squad for Saturday’s clash with Chelsea, though doubts remain over Leny Yoro’s participation after the defender was conspicuously absent from the travelling party heading to London.

Mainoo missed the Leeds fixture due to a minor training injury, marking his first absence since Michael Carrick took charge. Speaking at a press conference at Carrington on Friday, Carrick confirmed Mainoo was “working towards” full fitness, with a final decision yet to be made.

United departed for London on Friday afternoon with Mainoo in tow, however Yoro was nowhere to be seen at Stockport Station. His potential absence would represent a significant setback for Carrick, who is already dealing with the suspended duo of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.

Patrick Dorgu (hamstring injury) and Matthijs de Ligt (back injury) are not available for the game. Carrick has handed youngsters Shea Lacey and Tyler Fletcher places in the squad to face Chelsea. Both players featured on the bench against Leeds and have earned the opportunity to make the trip to the capital.

United will be desperate to bounce back against Chelsea following their 2-1 defeat to Leeds earlier in the week. The Yorkshire side held a two-goal advantage at half-time, and United’s hopes of staging a fightback were effectively extinguished when Martinez received his marching orders in the 59th minute. Martinez grabbed Dominic Calvert-Lewin by the hair and was immediately shown a red card for violent conduct. The defender now faces a three-match suspension, ruling him out of fixtures against Chelsea, Liverpool and Brentford.

Maguire is also banned for the visit to Stamford Bridge after receiving an additional one-match penalty when the FA’s charge for allegedly behaving in an improper manner towards a fourth official was upheld.

Chelsea were thrashed 3-0 by Manchester City at home last weekend. Liam Rosenior was appointed in January, yet he is already facing scrutiny after a series of dismal Chelsea displays.
