Michael Carrick’s Manchester United continued their pre-season preparations with a come-from-behind victory against Atletico Madrid. Carrick and co. are edging closer to the start of the 2026/26 Premier League season, with PSG, Leeds United and AC Milan still to come in pre-season.

The first half got off to a shocking start for the Red Devils, with Atletico Madrid taking the lead after just five minutes. A cross-cum-shot evaded everybody inside the penalty area and crept into the back of the net. United probed for an equaliser, but apart from a glancing Bryan Mbeumo header and an Amad free-kick, didn’t come close to levelling things up.

There was a much higher intensity from Carrick’s men after the restart, and that was rewarded with an eventual equaliser. Positive work from Shea Lacey forced the Atletico defender into a clumsy tackle, with the referee pointing to the spot. Bryan Mbeumo stepped up to convert and draw the score level in Stockholm. The ex-Brentford star had a second not too long after, this time squeezing the ball home from close range after sharp work from substitute Jack Fletcher.

Couldn’t really do much about the opener, with his defence much more at fault. Responded well with a sharp save later on in the first half and a wonderful stop down low to his left in the second.

Slow for the Atletico goal in the first half. Looked better in the second half, but it’s difficult to imagine he’ll be United’s first-choice right-back this season.

Another player caught on his heels for the opener, and could only stand and watch as the ball drifted into the back of the net.

Controlled possession well from defence and split lines with his passing. Looks as if he could be a really valuable asset to Carrick this season.

Took the full-back some time to get up to speed. Settled into the second half better than he had the first, but was subbed around the 75 minute mark.

Got his foot on the ball and gave United that midfield control they’ve been craving for some time. Had plenty of touches and passes, and looks like the sort of player Bruno Fernandes could thrive alongside. Positive early signs.

Tried his best to scoop the ball away off the line but had no joy. Had plenty of running to do in the middle of the park, and kept hold of the ball well.

Involved in the action and was rewarded for his efforts by winning the second-half penalty. Has enjoyed a positive pre-season and could be in line for a senior call-up.

Lively enough and looked like he might make something happen. Drilled a free-kick from the edge of the box, but it was somehow thwarted by the Atletico defence. Was subbed off at the break.

Had a chance in the first half but glanced a header just wide. Was able to get his name on the scoresheet eventually, with the Cameroon international converting comfortably from the spot. In the right place at the right time to bundle home the second, giving United the lead midway through the second half.

Deployed as a right winger but didn’t really have an impact on the game. Was involved in the four changes just before United took the lead.

Alert to the lapse in concentration from the Atletico defence to pounce and snatch the ball back high up. Had the calmness of mind to pick out Mbeumo in the box, who – just about – squeezed the ball across the line.

Looked shaky and nervy at times.

Looks as though he’ll be leaving United this summer, but was impressive enough during his second-half cameo.

The most eye-catching of the youngster substitutions. Should’ve come on earlier.
