Man Utd star De Ligt undergoes surgery as club issue emotional statement | Football | Sport
Manchester United have confirmed that Matthijs de Ligt has undergone an operation to resolve a back problem. De Ligt last featured for United in the Premier League clash against Crystal Palace on November 30. Then-head coach Ruben Amorim initially indicated that De Ligt would be sidelined for just one match, yet the Dutchman has remained on the treatment table ever since. United confirmed on Friday that De Ligt had successfully undergone the procedure.
De Ligt said: “Since November I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football. I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career. I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible.”
De Ligt returned to solo training on grass during the final week of April. United had previously stated that De Ligt remained positive and fully focused on regaining his fitness, though he will not pull on the shirt again this season.
The 26-year-old had been in outstanding form during the opening months of the campaign, earning United’s player of the month accolade in November. Prior to his injury, De Ligt had played every single minute of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
De Ligt’s injury has dashed his hopes of securing a place in the Netherlands squad for this summer’s World Cup. The defender was already battling for selection in the Dutch setup before sustaining his setback.
Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez have featured in the majority of matches at centre-back since Carrick’s arrival, though Martinez was absent for five fixtures between February and March owing to a calf problem.
Leny Yoro stepped into the side during Martinez’s absence, but the Frenchman picked up a minor hip complaint last month, which sidelined him for the 1-0 victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Ayden Heaven partnered Noussair Mazraoui in central defence against Chelsea on that occasion. United are monitoring centre-backs ahead of the summer transfer window, though bolstering other areas of the squad takes precedence.
