In the years which have followed, United have been through seven permanent appointments – each falling short of replicating Fergie’s trophy-laden tenure. While the club has since gone on to win various domestic and European trophies, their dominance in the Premier League has remained at bay. David Moyes managed a Community Shield in his short-lived stint at the helm, while Louis van Gaal managed to lift the FA Cup.

Jose Mourinho added a Europa League crown, an FA Cup and a League Cup to the Old Trafford trophy cabinet across his two-year spell, while Erik ten Hag guided United to both a League Cup and an FA Cup triumph during his tenure. Notably, it was only Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ruben Amorim who departed the club empty-handed, leaving behind little more than a collection of mixed memories from their respective stints in Greater Manchester.

Yet despite Amorim presiding over a deeply embarrassing 15th-place finish in 2024/25, Yoro remains convinced that the tide is turning, with ambitions of ending a 13-year Premier League drought firmly in his sights. When quizzed about the prospects of clinching the title in the upcoming season, he said: “We’re Man United so we have to think like that.

“And I know we have the potential to do it, so we have to do it. The mood is really good. We work really hard, and outside the pitch, we have a good vibe, good mood.

“So the target this season is to win every game, to be honest. For the team to be the best, for myself to do good games every time, to win trophies, and to be at the top.”

Michael Carrick has proven to be a revitalising force since his arrival at Old Trafford in January, initially stepping in as interim head coach until the end of the campaign. A third-place Premier League finish, after salvaging the wreckage left behind by Amorim, proved sufficient to secure him the role on a permanent basis this summer.

Addressing the challenge ahead, the 44-year-old said: “From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United. Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.

“Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.
