Manchester United’s summer is taking shape with two blockbuster additions already through the door in Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. The latter impressed again in the Red Devils’ 2-1 friendly victory over Atletico Madrid, but Michael Carrick and INEOS are planning significant additions before the window closes in a month’s time.

United continue to be linked with several targets, some more realistic than others, but reinforcements in defence and midfield are still expected. Joshua Zirkzee, Benjamin Sesko’s backup, could be replaced if the Dutchman finds a new club, while Newcastle’s Lewis Hall is being monitored as a rival option to Luke Shaw. Here, Express Sport takes a look at what United’s ideal August looks like in terms of the transfer market…

Aurelien Tchouameni arriving from Real Madrid would mark a landmark signing for United as the window draws to a close. They avoided paying astronomical fees for the likes of Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes earlier in the window, but splashing out a substantial sum for Tchouameni would firmly underline the club’s aspirations.

The 26-year-old would represent an ideal acquisition for Carrick’s revamped midfield as the United manager reshapes his squad following Casemiro’s departure. It has been previously suggested that Real Madrid would seek approximately £85million for Tchouameni, with the France international having recently penned a contract extension with Los Blancos.

Nevertheless, the Spanish club are keen on Manchester City‘s Rodri, which may prompt Tchouameni to weigh up his options elsewhere. It would provide Carrick with an impressive selection of midfield choices, with Tielemans, Santos and Kobbie Mainoo all competing for spots in the United lineup.

United hold an interest in Newcastle left-back Hall and would secure Shaw’s long-term replacement this summer if possible. The 21-year-old has caught the eye during his spell with the Magpies, who have already demonstrated a readiness to offload key personnel through the departures of Anthony Gordon and Tonali.

The England international is understood to be receptive to joining. Yet Newcastle are believed to be hesitant about selling another star player, meaning United may need to pay a substantial sum for the defender, who left Chelsea for £35m in 2023.

United depended heavily on Shaw throughout last season but will harbour worries about the seasoned full-back staying injury-free during the forthcoming campaign, while Patrick Dorgu appeared revitalised when deployed in a more advanced position on the left wing.

Acquiring Hall would enable United to begin their left-back succession planning ahead of schedule, even if the youngster commands a substantial transfer fee.

Sesko’s unavailability for United’s initial pre-season fixtures has underlined the club’s requirement to recruit a striker before the summer window closes. Zirkzee has spearheaded the attack for Carrick’s team but has found it difficult to establish himself since his arrival from Bologna in 2024, fuelling speculation of a potential £30m return to Serie A.

While Sesko flourished after Carrick assumed control at United, the Slovenian forward needed time to secure his spot in the first team. The 23-year-old is still developing, and it may not be beneficial to be the club’s sole senior striker as United prepare for their Champions League return and seek to build upon their third-place Premier League finish.

Dusan Vlahovic is amongst several strikers associated with the Reds but may offer the perfect answer to United’s dilemma. The 26-year-old is available as a free agent following his departure from Juventus this summer, where he netted 68 goals across 168 matches.

A costly acquisition could potentially hinder Sesko’s development under Carrick and hold him back from fulfilling his true potential. The former RB Leipzig striker could benefit from competing alongside Vlahovic, who would equally be afforded chances to establish himself as a rotation option at Old Trafford.
