Mason Greenwood could hand Man Utd £20m transfer windfall | Football | Sport
Mason Greenwood could hand Manchester United a substantial transfer windfall should he complete a move to Juventus this summer. The 24-year-old departed Old Trafford in 2023 on an initial loan deal to Getafe before agreeing a £26.7million switch to Marseille, where he has remained ever since.
In France, Greenwood has notched 47 goals and laid on 16 assists across all competitions – a level of form that has attracted considerable interest, particularly from Juventus. The Serie A giants have harboured an interest in the winger for some time, having first entered talks with United prior to his move to Marseille. Crucially, the club inserted a 40% to 50% sell-on clause into Greenwood’s contract when he departed for France.
That shrewd piece of business could prove extremely lucrative for United if Juventus follow through with a bid. According to The Sun, the 24-year-old is eager to make the switch to Italy as he “knows he can’t return to the Premier League.”
With Marseille demanding a starting fee of around £43.3m, United stand to pocket approximately £20m from the transaction. Gazzetta reports that the “dream” transfer may only materialise if the Ligue 1 outfit fall short of their European ambitions.
Marseille are chasing a Champions League berth, currently sitting just four points adrift of Lyon, who occupy third place.
However, with the side having recently been held to a draw by 15th-placed Nice and with just three matches remaining in the campaign, the club are running out of opportunities to secure this.
Should they fall short of Champions League qualification, Marseille may feel compelled to offload some of their prized assets to concentrate on mounting a challenge next season. It is also understood that Juventus enjoy an excellent working relationship with the French side, given their loan of Timothy Weah earlier this campaign.
Despite parting ways with Greenwood two years ago, United could still benefit financially from the winger further down the line.
