Mason Mount makes ‘huge mistake’ as Man Utd ace sets Michael Carrick challenge | Football | Sport

Mason Mount has been accused of making a ‘huge mistake’ after talking up Manchester United‘s title ambitions given their form under Michael Carrick. The interim manager has enjoyed a strong spell in charge of the Red Devils, who look certain to seal Champions League qualification for next season. They have only lost twice in 13 outings under Carrick with an average of 2.23 points per game under his leadership.

Mount, who has struggled for minutes in recent months because of an injury, is convinced that Carrick has finally unlocked United’s true potential. He recently told ESPN that he believes they can challenge for the Premier League title in the not-too-distant future. Even with a decision still to be made on Carrick’s future, the England international thinks domestic glory is within reach.

“I have a goal of winning the Premier League,” said Mount. “Obviously I’ve won the Champions League already, but can we [win the league?] Yes, I think we can as a group.

“We have to have that kind of mentality. It may seem a little bit far away, but you have to have that mentality to really push yourself as a group.

“We’ve shown what we can do against the big teams already, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, you know, so we’ve done it. We’ve already shown that this season, so we definitely can do it.

“It’s about now doing it on a bigger stage in the Champions League and doing it more consistently in the Premier League.

“I’ll hopefully be a massive part in that moving forward next season. Yeah, it’s a goal, I want to win the Premier League.”

Mount’s optimism has since been shot down by Jamie Carragher, who is far from convinced that United are the finished article.

Writing in his latest Telegraph column, the former Liverpool defender said: “Even the most diehard United supporters will understand their chances of winning the Premier League or Champions League next season do not hinge on who takes charge this summer.

“You can list all the top-class managers in the world, past and present, and none of them would look at the current United squad and believe they are a couple of steps from adding to their 20 league titles or conquering Europe.

“It would be a huge mistake to glance at the league table and argue that finishing third is proof that a title challenge is imminent, or that United can go toe-to-toe with Bayern Munich and PSG in the near future.”

United are targeting a league title to celebrate their 150th anniversary in 2028, but they still have plenty of work to do before they can challenge the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal over an entire season.
