Michael van Gerwen punched before he chases attacker in video footage | Other | Sport

Footage shared online has shown Michael van Gerwen appearing to be assaulted outside a bar while in the Netherlands. Van Gerwen was reportedly with friends back in his home country to celebrate King’s Day – a public holiday in the country which has the same celebratory feel as St. Patrick’s Day.

A video uploaded online by Dutch media depicted him having a heated conversation with a man while standing outside a bar in Den Bosch, as others watched on. He could be seen speaking into the man’s ear, who was also responding with his own comments to the three-time world champion. Later on in the video, the man swung a right hand towards Mighty Mike, who looked stunned by the punch.

Unsurprisingly, Van Gerwen was furious and responded by chasing the man as others tried to stop him. Before he could get his hands on the man who hit him, a group of men in orange jackets, who appeared to be security, got hold of the individual and pulled him away from the scene.

It does not appear Van Gerwen suffered any serious injuries or cuts and bruises, with the incident reported to have happened on Sunday night.

Express Sport have reached out to Van Gerwen’s representatives and the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) for comment.

Last year, Van Gerwen was involved in a similar incident which also took place during a night out. In September 2025, Van Gerwen was seen in the middle of a physical exchange in a kebab shop in Den Bosch.

Ven Gerwen went on to briefly explain what happened in that particular exchange not long after it took place. Speaking to Darts News, he said: “After an enjoyable night out, we wanted to grab something to eat, and unfortunately I ended up in a situation you’d rather avoid.

“The man came at me from the kitchen, not the other way round, following a verbal exchange. People are making it sound more dramatic than it actually was, which is a shame.

“As you can see, people stepped in straight away and the situation was resolved. I even spoke with the man’s nephew afterwards, and we cleared the air before we left.”

Van Gerwen will be involved in Premier League action in Aberdeen on Thursday evening when he takes on Luke Humphries. The Dutchman is currently on course to qualify for finals night, but is only four points ahead of fifth placed Gian van Veen.
