TV fans can’t get enough of “one of the best spy dramas” of all time that’s just been added to Netflix.
There’s a vast array of critically acclaimed and commercially successful television shows on offer across multiple streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, NOW, Paramount Plus and, more recently in the UK, HBO Max.
One “addictive” series, which came out in 2018, has been praised by a telly-loving fan who’s warned people not to tune in unless they’ve got the time not to get up from the sofa again because they’ll “fall in love” with it.
The limited series in question is The Little Drummer Girl, which was originally released on the BBC in 2018.
It’s based on the 1983 novel of the same name by acclaimed British author John le Carré. There was a 1984 film adaptation which starred Diane Keaton in the lead role of Charlie, now played by Florence Pugh in the TV miniseries. Charlie is a left-wing actress who, while on a working holiday in Greece, finds herself sucked into espionage in a ploy to help stop a terrorism plot.
One big fan of the show is Luke Ecclestone, who posts content online as Eccy Reviews. He’s amassed hundreds of thousands of followers on social media where he shares his opinions and insights on a range of films and television programmes.
In a recent video posted to TikTok, he began: “Warning: do not start this show unless you’re ready to binge-watch the whole entire thing ‘cause Netflix just added one of the best spy dramas.”
Luke continued: “The show that I am talking about is called The Little Drummer Girl. Now, this limited series dropped in 2018 on BBC but it has now just been added to Netflix and this is one of my favourite limited-series shows – and I have never even spoke about it.
“This stars Florence Pugh, who is amazing, and this is a spy, espionage, slow-burn, tense 1970 spy drama you have to see. This follows Charlie, played by Florence Pugh, who is this actress and she’s pulled into this real-life spy operation.”
He added: “Now, this has manipulation, this follows her losing who she actually is because she’s acting for so long. Even though this isn’t action heavy, it is psychological, it leaves you on the edge of your seat, and it’s everything I love about spy dramas.
“Constantly questioning what’s real and, oh my god, trust me right now; you’re going to fall in love with this show. It’s emotional, it’s brilliant, and you need to go and get it on your watchlist right now.”
In the comments section, fellow TikTok users were keen to share their thoughts. One person said: “Boss show, watched this when it came out” while another said: “watching it now”.
A third commented: “Can’t wait…loved Diane Keaton in the original movie. Book is excellent as well.”
While a forth said: “Great performance by Flo.”
A fifth branded it the “best thing ever on Netflix”.
