Former Argentina star Angel di Maria has expressed his joy over La Albiceleste’s World Cup semi-final win over England – despite their defeat in the final to Spain. Argentina’s performances at this summer’s tournament in North America have created plenty of headlines.

The South American nation battled their way to the final after surviving a chaotic last-32 clash against Cape Verde before recovering from 2-0 down to beat Egypt 3-2 in the last 16. Lionel Scaloni’s side then needed extra time to see off Switzerland before coming from behind again to knock out Thomas Tuchel’s England 2-1 in the semi-finals.

But Argentina were ultimately unable to defend the World Cup trophy they won in Qatar four years ago after Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal sealed victory for La Roja in New Jersey.

The match in New York was shrouded in controversy over Argentina’s aggressive behaviour and defensive approach against Luis de La Fuente’s men.

And Di Maria, who made 145 senior appearances for Argentina, has now had his say on the tournament – picking out the victory over England as a particular highlight.

The build-up to the game was full of tension, with relations between the two nations having long been strained following the 1982 Falklands War, during which both countries clashed over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the South Sandwich Islands.

Speaking to TNT Sports after playing in Rosario Central’s defeat to Belgrano, Di Maria said: “For me, the World Cup ended when Argentina won against England. We gave the biggest joy to the country.”

The 38-year-old was also asked about Lionel Messi amid doubts over his international future. The legendary figure was in tears after his nation lost to Spain, with it widely believed that he had played his final World Cup match.

He said: “Yes, Leo should continue for as long as he wants. I think he can keep going for many more years.

“At 39 years old, he’s proven he’s one of the best and still the best in history, with no ceiling.”

The former Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus star was also asked about Argentina boss Scaloni – who became emotional when discussing his future after the tournament.

He added: “As for Scaloni, he’s the leader of the Scaloneta and his national team and I hope he continues. I think it’s in everyone’s best interest, as he’s currently building an excellent generation of young new players and all of this adds to the national team. The decision is his and he knows what he wants but as an Argentine, I hope he continues.”
