Back in the late 1970s, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi were members of the original cast of Saturday Night Live. One of their recurring sketches featured the Blues Brothers, a criminal musical duo, performing as a live band. It wasn’t long before Dan had penned a mammoth script starring himself and John as Jake and Elwood Blues, in a musical action comedy with some epic cameos.

The John Landis-directed cult classic follows Jake as he gets out of jail before he and his brother visit the Chicago Catholic orphanage they grew up in. After discovering it’s due to close unless $5000 is raised, The Blues Brothers set off on a Mission from God to reform their band and get back to live performing, all the while pursued by the cops, some rednecks and a group of neo-Nazis.

The Blues Brothers features musical numbers with singers including James Brown, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Cab Calloway and Aretha Franklin. Meanwhile, the rest of the impressive cast includes Carrie Fisher, John Candy, Twiggy and Frank Oz. Today the film regularly features in polls of the greatest movies ever made.

The Blues Brothers is on BBC2 this Sunday at 10:45pm.
