Palma Airport fire: Horror blaze erupts near Spain’s air hub as smoke seen for miles | World | News
-A major fire broke out at the Mercapalma wholesale food market near Palma Airport at around 3pm local time on Monday.
-The blaze is believed to have started in a lorry before spreading to several other heavy goods vehicles.
-Five heavy goods vehicles, including lorries and trailers, were reportedly destroyed in the fire.
-Palma Airport activated its self-protection plan because of the fire’s proximity to the runways.
-Two firefighters have been treated for smoke inhalation – no further injuries have yet been reported
-Despite the blaze, no flights have been disrupted.
-Residents in the nearby village of Son Banya were advised to stay indoors as firefighters tackled the flames.
-The firefighting operation was reinforced by Bombers de Mallorca, the Balearic Institute of Nature (IBANAT), the Air Force and aircraft.
-According to local reports, the fire has now been brought under control, with emergency crews remaining at the scene to carry out cooling operations.
-Investigations into what sparked the blaze remain ongoing
