Philippines earthquake: Huge 5.3 tremors rock country as Quezon City in quake zone | World | News

A huge magnitude 5.3 earthquake has hit near the Philippines on Wednesday, causing tremors near islands in the east. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake began just under 50 miles North-east of Casiguran – a municipality in the province of Aurora – at a depth of six miles.

Tremors were also felt in parts of Luzon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), when it struck at 10.11pm local time. Phivolcs added that it was a low-intensity quake in Quezon City, Metro Manila, but warned of possible aftershocks.

Low-intensity tremors were also recorded in Jose Panganiban and Mercedes in Camarines Norte and in Guinayangan and Infanta in Quezon.

Elsewhere, the quake was felt in Ragay, Iriga City, Pili, Sipocot, and Sagñay in Camarines Sur.

A separate five magnitude earthquake also hit the Philippines on Wednesday, roughly 30 miles South-west Balangonan, in the south of the country. The tremors reached a depth of roughly 40 miles.

There have been no reports of damage or casualties following either incident.
