POLL: Is Pep Guardiola the greatest manager in British football history? Vote now | Football | Sport
Pep Guardiola has certainly made his mark on English football over the course of his decade-long spell at Manchester City. He became the first manager to win four successive Premier League titles and has revolutionised the domestic game as we know it. Over the last 10 years, countless clubs across the country have adopted variations of his possession-based playing style with varying degrees of success.
However, all great things must come to an end eventually and that time has finally arrived for Guardiola. He is leaving the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season and it’s expected he will take a lengthy break before a potential return to the dugout elsewhere. He leaves as a legend in every sense of the word and has made a convincing case to be known as the greatest manager in British football history.
Some would argue that the sheer scale of his influence on the English game, alongside his incredible record of achievement at City, puts him ahead of every head coach to have ever graced the touchline.
Not everybody would agree with that assessment, though. Some would say that Sir Alex Ferguson deserves that honour, having transformed Manchester United into the world’s biggest footballing powerhouse during his 26-year tenure.
Arsene Wenger also deserves to be in that conversation as the only manager to have completed an entire Premier League season without losing a single game.
Going further back, there are plenty of other candidates, with the likes of Brian Clough, Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly also revered by many fans of a certain age.
Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson, who both tasted success with unfancied Ipswich Town before leading the England national team, can also be considered among the greatest to ever do it.
Ramsey, of course, is the only manager to have won silverware with the Three Lions having famously led them to World Cup glory in 1966.
You can also look north of the border, with Jock Stein leading Celtic to European glory in 1967 as well as winning nine successive Scottish titles.
But are any of those managers as great as Guardiola, considering what the outgoing City boss has done over the last decade? Have your say in our poll above.
