There is a “real possibility” of the world facing “nuclear apocalypse”, Russian ex-president Dmitry Medvedev said as he warned Russia is heading for conflict with the UK and the rest of Europe.
In a chilling forecast to Russian schoolchildren, the close Putin henchman said: “Our conflict with the Western world today is existential in nature.
“That is, it’s a question of existence.
“And, unfortunately, I have no illusions about what will happen next.”
He warned the current tensions resemble “the period before World War I and, to some extent, the 1930s that preceded World War II.”

He warned: “I’m often accused of using harsh rhetoric and talking about a nuclear apocalypse.
“But, unfortunately, it’s a real possibility.
“Anyone who doesn’t realise this is either a dreamer or a fool.
“But I really don’t want that to happen.”
He told the children: “God forbid, of course, that we witness such events, but they cannot be ruled out.
“And we must prepare for them.
“This is precisely why we have a triad of strategic nuclear forces in our country.
“And it is maintained, as they say, in proper condition.”
He added: “Let me remind you that the only country that ever used nuclear weapons was the United States of America.
“And no matter how much they talk about this threat….emanating from Iran, and that they can build a bomb, only the USA used bombs.”
Despite his latest threat of a nuclear World War III, he blamed the West for the perilous global situation.
“The Europeans say that war with Russia is inevitable,” he said.
“I don’t know where they got this from, but it’s a mantra.
“The Russians will definitely attack us.”
He claimed: “Not a single speech by Russian politicians, not a single statement, not a single document adopted by Russia mentions the need for any conflict with Europe.”
Yet his own words and the daily outpourings of Kremlin-funded propaganda TV threaten strikes on the West almost non-stop.
Medvedev said Russia was “forced to conduct a special military operation” – the war against Ukraine – and claimed “the reasons are well known” without explaining them.
“As for Europe, we have no aggressive intentions, but nevertheless, this flywheel is turning,” he said.
He accused the West of producing “a huge amount of weapons” and expressing the view that “war is inevitable”.
“You understand where this road leads, as sad as it sounds,” he said.
“If you say every day that war is inevitable, it will start.
“There could be plenty of reasons and causes.”
He claimed Europe and the EU “are led by idiots. Simply idiots.”
They were “utterly destructive, narrow-minded people who rave about war with the Russian Federation” who have led the world on a “dangerous path….
“This conflict will likely not disappear even within a generation.”
Medvedev is Putin’s deputy on the Russian security council.
As president of Russia from 2008 to 2012, he is the only man alive other than Putin whose finger has been on the Russian nuclear trigger.
He mocked Donald Trump’s claims to have ended up to ten wars.
“We ourselves understand what this famous politician’s words mean today,” he said.
“The problem is that almost all of these conflicts have resumed.”
