Russian envoy mocks Starmer with blistering five-word comment on ‘quitting’ rumours | World | News
Russia has been celebrating the rumours that Sir Keir Starmer could be preparing to resign with mocking social media posts. The Kremlin’s investment envoy Kiril Dmitriev reshared Donald Trump’s post on Truth Social, which said the Prime Minister “will resign”.
He added: “We did it. Starmer’s resignation unites us all.” In another post, Mr Dmitriev baselessly claimed that Sir Keir “interfered against Trump and for Kamala in the US elections”. He added, “Aliens… for showing your omnipotence & goodness by convincing Starmer to resign within two weeks of the request” before asking, “Can you please do Merz next?”
While he claimed to “wish him well”, the US President took to his social media platform Truth Social to slam the UK Prime Minister for his handling of immigration and energy.
He wrote: “Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well! President DJT.”
This comes amid growing calls for Sir Keir to step aside following Andy Burnham’s victory in Makerfield on Thursday.
A Government source told The Telegraph that instead of rallying around him, several ministers are understood to have urged him to give a timeframe for his departure.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper are said to have pressed the Prime Minister to resign.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves remains one of the few senior Cabinet figures still publicly backing Sir Keir, who is understood to be spending the weekend with his family as he weighs his options.
As of Saturday, Downing Street maintained that he would not be going anywhere.
