Serena Williams’ husband’s eight-word message as daughter leaves court | Tennis | Sport

Alexis Ohanian put his full support behind wife Serena Williams as the tennis legend returned to Centre Court action at Wimbledon. Williams is back at SW19 at the age of 44, four years since her last appearance. Both her daughters came along, though her youngest, Adira, had to leave before play started due to rules on the age of spectators. The American’s husband – whose net worth was estimated at around £113million as of 2024 – was still enjoying the show and shared a message on social media which fans loved.

“We’re so proud of you mama – cheering section,” Alexis wrote. Accompanying his post were two pictures – one of Serena on court and the other of him and both daughters getting ready for the action to start. A number of fans responded with their own messages of support. “What a joy that your girls get to see their mama, the G.O.A.T., in her element. Sending good luck wishes to you all!” one wrote. “This is adorable” was the simple message from another.

Serena was put to the test by opponent Maya Joint, more than 20 years her junior. The Australian won the first set 6-3 and a hard fought battle continued into the night.

While Adira couldn’t watch, Serena’s elder daughter Olympia was allowed to take in the action as you have to be five years old to stay. The age rule also affected Andy Murray in 2024. On that occasion, only two of his four children were allowed to watch him play.

The crowd was full of voice, not least when the multiple former champ stepped out. As the match entered its second set and the stakes grew higher, so did the noise from those gathered under the roof.

Fans were in full voice for the seven-time former winner, whose younger daughter wasn’t even born the last time she played at Wimbledon. Indeed, Olympia and Adira are closer in age to 20-year-old opponent Joint than Williams is.

Before making her return, Williams admitted she left the decision late. “I think… I had until Monday to decide. I think it was like Sunday [when I decided],” she said. “I just wasn’t sure up until then. Honestly, I’m still not even sure, but we’ll see (smiling).

“I think my feelings will be different,” she said over the weekend. “I think in general my expectations are definitely different for the first time in my career.

“I feel like my feelings are just – not that I never enjoyed it before, or else I wouldn’t be here today – but I feel like I’m really going to enjoy being out there.”
