Should England drop Phil Foden from World Cup squad? Vote now | Football | Sport
Rewind two years, and the ‘Phil Foden is on fire’ chant soundtracked England’s run to the Euro 2024 final. Fast forward to today, and there’s a chance the playmaker won’t even be involved in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.
Foden struggled for form at Euro 2024, and that carried over into the 2024/25 season for Manchester City. While the 25-year-old has improved this time around, he may have left it too late to make it into the final 26-man squad for this summer’s tournament.
Foden did feature for England during the March international break, but he came under heavy criticism from manager Tuchel, who wasn’t too impressed by his performance. Since then, Foden has caught the eye with a couple of cameo appearances for City, most notably during the 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace last week.
It’s unlikely that all four of them will be taken, meaning at least one will be left disappointed by Tuchel’s decision. Will it be Foden? Well, you can have your own say…
What do you think? Should Foden be left out of England’s World Cup squad? Vote in our poll below. And have your say in the comments too.
City boss Pep Guardiola has been full of praise for Foden, even though the midfielder has struggled at times throughout the last 24 months. Speaking after the win over Palace, Guardiola remarked: “In these types of games, (against) a low block…you need quality, the spark, the talent, the vision, something.
“It’s not in the tactical boards, it’s not in the meetings, it’s not in the videos, it’s not even the training. (Foden) receives the ball in small spaces and creates something, like the good players, he can deliver and I’m really pleased for him. We want (him) close to the box because Phil close to the box is unique.”
Foden’s only World Cup appearance came at the 2022 tournament when he featured regularly for Gareth Southgate’s side as they reached the quarter-finals. Foden had been involved in England’s Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 squads, with the Three Lions reaching the final on both occasions.
