Spain coach unleashes Argentina rant as FIFA to take action | Football | Sport

Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has criticised the behaviour of the Argentina players during and after the World Cup final. Last Sunday saw De La Fuente’s team claim a 1-0 victory over the 2022 winners in New Jersey, with extra time needed to determine the winner.

There were chaotic scenes after the final whistle as Argentina star Leandro Paredes was shown a red card after kicking Spain defender Eric Garcia to the floor, and went on to grab the Barcelona star by the throat. Paredes went on to have another altercation with Spain midfielder Gavi.

However, a BBC report has since claimed that the red card has been removed and that FIFA will not take any disciplinary action.

More drama followed after the final whistle as Nahuel Molina appeared to take a swipe at Rodri, while Argentina coach Roberto Ayala allegedly threw a punch at Dani Olmo.

De la Fuente has now spoken about what happened after the final whistle at the World Cup final, with the Spain boss now criticising the behaviour of the Argentina players.

“At the time, I didn’t realise it. I was celebrating, hugging team-mates,” De La Fuente said in an interview with Spanish TV.

“But in any case, it is intolerable, unacceptable, it cannot be allowed. Players of that stature, whom I praised in the days leading up to the match and continue to praise, who are great players with a tremendous coach, surely they must have felt just as bad as we did seeing those reactions.

“I want to highlight our behaviour in the face of that kind of aggression and provocation. Our players always kept their composure and behaved like true professionals.”

FIFA have since issued a statement confirming that they will investigate the post-match scenes that followed the final whistle at the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium.

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents,” a statement from FIFA read.

“Further details will be communicated by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee once the prosecutor’s report has been completed.”
