Strawberries last longer if you pour 1 thing over them before fridge


Foodies are being urged to ‘properly wash’ their fruit before putting it in the fridge. The helpful tip is popular among shoppers because it helps berries to ‘last longer’. Bobby Parrish, also known as ‘The Grocery Store Guy’, shared the method with his 1.8 million TikTok followers in a recent post.

In the video, Bobby captioned his post: “You finally learned the correct way to wash fruit and now they last longer.” He explained: “This is how you properly wash your berries. One part white vinegar to three parts water, soak berries for five minutes, rinse, then let dry before you put in the fridge. Doing this will extend the shelf life of fruit.”

In the footage, Bobby also demonstrated the method for his followers, washing strawberries and blueberries. The video proved popular, gaining thousands of likes. Among the viewers, one commenter replied: “Something I’ve learned in my 50s, is to always remove the green part immediately after purchasing. It holds moisture and even more after washing.”

Another commenter said: “Really have to let them dry completely! This works so well.” Someone else shared: “I use baking soda!”

According to Healthline, people should clean strawberries by running the fruit under cool water, gently rubbing the berries with their fingers, draining them in a clean strainer, and then patting them dry with a paper towel.

The advice says: “Some people also use vinegar to help clean strawberries, and according to a 2023 study, this is a way to remove the four most typical insecticides. Soaking strawberries in a bowl of water with 3% vinegar or 3% salt solution and then rinsing them with running water was found to be effective.

“To pre-soak your strawberries in a white vinegar or salt bath, add one tablespoon of vinegar (or salt) to two cups of water and soak the strawberries in it for about five minutes before cleaning them under running water.”

Strawberries are a good source of antioxidants and vitamins, including vitamin C. The NHS says that seven strawberries count as one of your five a day. People are advised to eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day.

According to the NHS: “The Five A Day campaign is based on advice from the World Health Organization (WHO), which recommends eating a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables a day to lower the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer.”
