Teenage girl kills herself after alleged gang-rape – eight arrested | World | News
A teenage girl has reportedly taken her own life after allegedly being gang-raped by a group of people. The 17-year-old girl was found dead on Wednesday following the horrific incident and eight people have been detained.
The girl’s brother came forward and reported that she had been gang-raped before being threatened that there would be consequences if she told anyone.
Police say the eight people have been booked on charges of abetment of suicide, gang rape, insulting with the intention of breaching the peace, and criminal intimidation.
As reported by the Indian Express the victim’s brother said: “We decided to approach the police and file a complaint the next morning.
“She was overwhelmed by the alleged harassment and threats from the accused.”
The incident happened in the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh, India, and police say they are investigating videos posted on social media that do not show the assault.
Anurag Arya, senior superintendent, said: “The investigation is on. The police are examining the case from all possible angles.”
The news comes as protests have been held in India following a number of incidents of sexual violence.
As reported by the Express, a 70-year-old woman was allegedly raped by two men after they broke into her home in the Alwar district of Rajasthan.
The woman said she was asleep in her room on July 21 when two men came into her room.
One man then raped her while the other other assisted, but her son woke up in the room next door and scared the men away.
Two men were arrested less than an hour later and were remanded in custody.
Joginder Singh Rajawat said the police treated the complaint with urgency and immediately launched an operation under the supervision of Kherli Station House Officer Vijay Chandel.
